Administrative Supplements for the P30 Cancer Center Support Grants to Enhance Sexual Orientation and Gender Identity (SOGI) Data Collection

The NCI Division of Cancer Control and Population Sciences (DCCPS) in partnership with the NCI Center to Reduce Health Disparities (CRCHD) and the NIH Sexual & Gender Minority Research Office (SGMRO) announces the opportunity for recipients of NCI-funded P30 Cancer Center Support Grants to submit requests for administrative supplements to implement standardized sexual orientation and gender identity (SOGI) data collection, with the potential future use of the data to support surveillance-related activities. These projects should be designed to study the process of implementing NASEM-recommended SOGI measures in cancer-related clinical contexts. Details on the specifications of the measures that applicants must use are detailed in the Scientific Requirements Section.

The purpose of this opportunity is to provide resources to study the implementation of standardized SOGI data collection at NCI-Designated Cancer Centers, in collaboration with their satellite and outlying clinics, and to assess factors associated with implementation, such as feasibility, acceptability, adoption, and appropriateness. Cancer Centers are strongly encouraged to ensure data collection implementation is conducted at their satellite and outlying clinics in addition to their main center, as including both geographically, demographically, and linguistically diverse populations is a priority of the supplement.

Awardees will be expected to assess patient-, provider-, and/or clinic/organizational-level barriers and facilitators toward implementation of standardized SOGI data collection, document implementation processes, and identify and pilot viable solutions to support full integration and use of standardized SOGI data collection in the clinical setting to support surveillance and research.

With increased efforts focusing on systematic SOGI data collection in the clinical setting, the long-term goal is to develop models to collect this important data on a larger scale, ultimately leading to the inclusion of SOGI data in cancer registries and more research involving SGM communities. These supplements are a part of a larger NCI research effort to increase and accelerate SGM cancer research and reduce the disparities experienced by this population along the cancer care continuum through informed, evidence-based SGM patient cancer care.

The primary aims of this one-year supplement opportunity are: 1) the successful implementation of administering standardized SOGI measures at NCI-Designated Cancer Centers; 2) identification of barriers and facilitators toward implementation of SOGI measures at the patient, provider, and organizational level; and 3) development and piloting of viable solutions to integrate the meaningful use of SOGI measures into clinical and administrative contexts.

Eligibility Requirements
  • This opportunity is open to all currently funded P30 Cancer Center Support Grants
  • Only one supplement request per center will be considered
  • Cancer Centers are required to implement the three-measure set of SOGI questions recommended to the NIH by the National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine, described below in the Scientific Requirements section
  • Cancer Centers are encouraged to work with cancer registries and consider how these data can be incorporated with cancer registries and other databases to facilitate further research in SGM populations in the future
  • Cancer Centers should include details on the training that will be conducted for clinicians and clinic staff to collect SOGI data in a sensitive and culturally appropriate manner
  • Preference will be given to applications that include implementation of the SOGI data collection at satellite and outlying affiliated clinics to ensure geographic and patient diversity
  • Supplement requests may not exceed $150,000 total costs for one year
  • Cancer centers whose P30 Cancer Center Support Grant will be in an extension at the time the award is made in FY22 are not eligible for this supplement
  • Awards will be based on responsiveness to this announcement, the range of applications representing different geographic regions, and the availability of funds. It is anticipated that awards for this supplement opportunity will be made in September 2022.
