In 2018, Kraft Heinz announced our goal to make 100% of our packaging globally recyclable, reusable or compostable by 2025. Unfortunately, sustainable packaging materials often lack the desired level of barrier required to meet the targeted shelf life for our food products. Conventional solutions for improving barrier can still have limited barrier performance with sustainable materials or be incompatible with the recycling or composting streams.
We are seeking barrier materials and/or coatings for packaging that deliver against high oxygen or moisture barrier requirements for dry or aqueous food products with varying pH levels and oil content.
The barrier cannot migrate into the food products, must maintain its integrity during the product’s distribution and shelf life, and must meet the requirements for the desired end of life such as recycling or composting.
Deadline: May 31, 2023
Funding is proposal-dependent starting with proof-of-concept, typically ranging from $25,000 to $100,000 for a 6-month length project with the potential for expansion based on results and opportunities.
