Broad Pragmatic Studies PCORI Funding Announcement -- Cycle 1 2025

The Patient-Centered Outcomes Research Institute (PCORI) intends to release a Broad Pragmatic Studies (BPS) PCORI Funding Announcement (PFA) on Dec. 3, 2024, seeking to fund patient-centered comparative clinical effectiveness research (CER) projects. This preannouncement provides potential applicants additional time to identify collaborators; obtain patient, community and partner input on potential studies; and create responsive, high-quality proposals.

All applications must align the proposed research with at least one of PCORI’s National Priorities for Health described within the PFA and below. PCORI’s Research Project Agenda includes a set of Topic Themes that are also included in this funding opportunity and further detailed below. Applicants have the option to choose up to three Topic Themes within the Research Project Agenda based on how their proposed research aligns with the themes. However, aligning with a Topic Theme is not required. The National Priorities for Health and Topic Themes will assist PCORI in determining the optimal review pathway for the proposed research.

Areas of Interest

This funding opportunity seeks applications addressing at least one of four of PCORI’s National Priorities for Health. To be considered responsive, applications must propose research meeting the distinctive requirements of this PFA and address at least one of the following National Priorities for Health:

  • Increase Evidence for Existing Interventions and Emerging Innovations in Health
    • Goal: Strengthen and expand ongoing comparative clinical effectiveness research focused on both existing interventions and emerging innovations to improve healthcare practice, health outcomes and health equity.
  • Achieve Health Equity
    • Goal: Expand stakeholder engagement, research and dissemination approaches that lead to continued progress toward achieving health equity in the United States.
  • Accelerate Progress Toward an Integrated Learning Health System
    • Goal: Foster actionable, timely, place-based and transformative improvements in patient-centered experiences, care provision and ultimately improved health outcomes through collaborative, multisectoral research to support a health system that understands and serves the needs and preferences of individuals.
  • Advance the Science of Dissemination, Implementation and Health Communication
    • Goal: Advance the scientific evidence for and the practice of dissemination, implementation, and health communication to accelerate the effective sharing of comparative clinical effectiveness research results for public understanding and uptake into practice.

PCORI’s Research Project Agenda includes a set of Topic Themes that inform focused funding opportunities for patient-centered CER. The Topic Themes speak to health issues facing large numbers of people in the United States including children, youth and older adults and address urgent topics such as substance use, mental and behavioral health and violence and trauma, as well as widespread conditions including cardiovascular disease, pain management and sleep health.

Applicants for the Cycle 1 2025 BPS PFA may select up to three of PCORI’s Topic Themes within the Research Project Agenda that best align with their proposed research. Applicants may also opt not to select from the PCORI Topic Themes and select “other” to indicate that their research aligns with other areas of need for patient-centered CER. In keeping with past cycles, the BPS PFA welcomes all investigator-initiated, patient-centered CER.

For Cycle 1 2025, PCORI has identified Special Areas of Emphasis (SAEs) within the BPS funding opportunity. The purpose of calling out these SAEs is to encourage submissions to these areas, not to limit submissions only to these areas. Applicants addressing an SAE must identify which of the listed areas of research is best associated with their research approach.

  • Social Isolation and Loneliness in Older Adults
  • Health Communication Strategies for Uptake of COVID-19 Vaccine
