Congressionally Directed Medical Research Programs -- Traumatic Brain Injury and Psychological Health Research Program -- Investigator-Initiated Research Award

The FY23 TBIPHRP IIRA is intended to support studies that will make an important contribution toward understanding, preventing, assessing, and treating psychological health conditions and/or TBI. Research projects may focus on applied research through translational research, including preclinical studies in animal models and human subjects, as well as correlative studies associated with an existing clinical trial.

Applications should clearly demonstrate the project’s potential near-term and long-term outcome(s)/product(s) (knowledge and/or materiel) and how they will impact a critical problem or question in the field of research and/or patient care in the FY23 TBIPHRP IIRA Focus Areas(s) addressed. Research involving human subjects and human anatomical substances is permitted; however, this FY23 TBIPHRP IIRA may not be used to conduct clinical trials.

Eligibility Requirements

Independent investigators at all academic/career levels (or equivalent) may be named by organizations as the PI on the application. Postdoctoral fellows are not considered independent investigators unless documentation is provided by the applicant’s organization.

Early-Career Investigator Partnering Option: The Early-Career Investigator must be an independent investigator within 10 years after completion of their terminal degree by the time of the application submission deadline (excluding time spent in residency or on family medical leave). Time spent as a postdoctoral fellow is not excluded. Postdoctoral fellows are not considered independent investigators unless documentation is provided by the applicant’s organization. Lapses in research time or appointments as denoted in the biographical sketch should be explained in the application. For Early-Career Investigator Partnering Option applications, at least one of the named PIs must be an Early-Career Investigator.
