The experimental testing of predicted molecular functions of gene products is an essential part of improving genome annotation. Registered users can apply to COMBREX to receive funding for the experimental testing of bacterial and archaeal gene products. We expect most successful grants will involve genes that have relatively specific predictions of molecular function, but no experimental validation. (Such genes are typically marked with blue functional status symbols.) The biochemical characterization of these genes also provides valuable information about the molecular function(s) of other, sequence-similar proteins such as those in the same Protein Cluster as the validated gene.
Eligibility Requirements
Any laboratory in the US is eligible. (COMBREX is currently seeking sources of funding to support international efforts.)

Anyone can apply. Applications from beginning graduate students, postdocs or faculty are welcome; however, the laboratory in which the work will be done must be specified, and previous biochemical experience of the lab is an important evaluation criterion.
