This NOFO encourages research relevant to the development of novel screening approaches and/or therapeutic interventions for conditions for which newborn screening has already been implemented, as well as for potentially fatal or disabling genetic conditions that could benefit in the near future from the early detection made possible by newborn screening. This research is especially critical given that accurate screening tests and demonstrable benefits of early intervention are often prerequisites for new conditions to be added to newborn screening panels.
The R01 activity code supports long-term projects, or projects designed to increase knowledge in a well-established area. Projects that are exploratory or novel, break new ground, extend previous discoveries toward new directions or applications, or generate pilot data in preparation for a larger study are well-suited for the companion R21 Exploratory/Developmental Research Grant NOFO, PAR-25-266.
