U.S. Mission to India -- Promoting Climate-Smart Agriculture

This project supports U.S. Department of State goals of facilitating economic development and addressing global climate change by promoting sustainable agricultural practices in India through the adoption of climate-smart agriculture (CSA), defined by the World Bank as “an integrated approach to managing landscapes — cropland, livestock, forests and fisheries — that address the interlinked challenges of food security and climate change.”  This one-year award is designed to discourage farming practices in India that are deleterious to the environment, such as crop residue burning and excessive use of pesticides or fertilizers, and to replace those with technology-backed approaches that will sustainably increase agricultural yield and productivity while reducing harmful environmental impacts. Through the engage, educate, and empower strategic approach, the project will accomplish three objectives, namely: 1) reduction of greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions by promoting the adoption of low-carbon alternatives to stubble-burning; 2) reduction of GHG emissions by eliminating or reducing the use of fossil fuel-dependent inputs such as synthetic fertilizers and chemical pesticides; and 3) sustainable increases in agricultural productivity, farm incomes, food safety and security, holistic development of the farming community, as well as stronger supply chains of farm-based products.
