Presenter Assistance Grant

Funding Agency:
South Arts

In our continuing effort to build a better South through the arts, South Arts with support from the National Endowment for the Arts offers a limited number of Presenter Assistance grants to nonprofit performing and literary arts presenters in our nine-state region. To strengthen program design and organizational capacity for presenters, funding up to $700 will support Planning Grants for artist residencies and Travel Grants for professional development. These grants are very limited and awarded on a first-come/first-served basis; so early submission is encouraged. A dollar-for-dollar cash match is a requirement.

These grants are intended for:

  • traveling to see work;
  • participating in a significant professional development opportunity; and
  • hosting an artistic director planning visit.

Presenter Assistance grant applications must be submitted online at least 60 days prior to the activities.

Presenting organizations are limited to one Planning Grant AND one Travel Grant per South Arts fiscal year.

***Because there is no set deadline, but this opportunity is limited to one application from Duke per year, please contact Anastasia Maddox in the Office of Research Support at amm39@duke.edu so that your application will be noted and information regarding Duke's eligibility can be updated.***

Planning Grants

Through South Arts’ Dance Touring Initiative, we have become convinced of the value of in-person, on-the-ground planning between presenters and artists. Artists learn about the community, presenters talk through a variety of potential artistic experiences for their community, expectations are articulated, and often new ideas emerge – and ultimately a more relevant, satisfying and successful residency takes place.

This funding supports travel expenses for an Artistic Director or artist to visit presenters and their communities to plan residency activities for upcoming engagements. These grants aim to support the collaborative effort between presenters and touring (performing and literary) artists, and assist with building audiences and strengthening community involvement through artist residencies. The maximum request is 50% of the travel expenses, up to $700. Awarded funds are disbursed on a reimbursement basis only. Applications are due at least 60 days prior to the planning visit.

Travel Grants

During these challenging times, South Arts understands the importance of professional development for presenters throughout the year. Through our commitment to professional development in the field, which can include seeing new work and attending convenings, we hope to impact presenters’ knowledge and capacity. The intent of this grant program is to offer assistance to presenters for opportunities that they normally would not be able to afford. Applications will only be accepted for new opportunities that presenters, under normal circumstances, are unable to attend. Consideration will be given to presenters who have experienced an ongoing hardship and have been unable to continue their professional development.

This funding supports staff members to travel to conferences, workshops, and other professional development opportunities. These grants support travel expenses (for example, lodging and air/ground transportation), admission/registration fees, and other related expenses. The maximum request is 50% of the conference/professional development expenses, up to $700. Awarded funds are disbursed on a reimbursement basis only. Applications are due at least 60 days prior to the event. An application may be submitted to support multiple staff members (up to the maximum request of $700 total).
