The funds are designed to provide to tenure track faculty members in their first to fourth year, at American Institutions, who hold M.D. and/or Ph.D. degrees, start-up support to move the project forward to the point where R01 or other independent funding can be obtained.  Applicants with current R01 funding should not apply.

Grant provides $75,000 annually for a period of up to three years.  Grants are not renewable.  Institutions may submit one proposal per session.  Interested candidates should work through their sponsored projects office.

Deadlines

  • Duke Internal Deadline: June 23, 2024
  • Grant Awards Deadline: August 1, 2024
Eligibility Requirements

Eligibility:

  • Applicants should be in the first to fourth year of their tenure track faculty position and not have current R01 funding.
  • Instructors, clinical instructor and clinical educator line faculty are not eligible.
  • The Foundation is most interested in basic research with upstream potential for impacting disease.

Other funding restriction:
The intent of the sponsor is to support highly promising young investigators at the time when start-up funds are limited.
According to Mallinckrodt, if a candidate has significant funding, such as a foundation career development award it will lessen the chances for an award from Malinckrodt.
It is not the intent to support projects that are already under way and are already receiving significant grant support to provide long-range funding beyond an initial 3-year period of support.Proposals must be accompanied by letters of approval by the Dean of the medical school and/or other senior faculty member(s) who can represent the support of the institution who are acquainted with the qualifications of the applicant.

Amount Description

The regular grants provide $75,000 per year for a period of up to three years. The Foundation will not fund overhead.
