Surveillance of Spina Bifida across the Lifespan

Our goal is to develop a multi-site system for population-based, non-research surveillance of spina bifida, or SB, across the lifespan (SB Surveillance). Our focus is to collect data to improve our knowledge of prevalence, mortality, and health outcomes for people with SB of all ages.

• Under Component A, we (CDC) will expect you to collect, manage, and analyze data, submit data to us, and disseminate information to partners.
• Under Component B, you can develop a special project related to SB.

Eligibility Requirements

To be eligible for Component A, you must have all of the following:
• Demonstrated authority or ability to collect data on people with SB across all ages (see Documentation of Eligibility)
• Access to state birth defects surveillance data on SB and state vital records data
• Access to additional data sources for information on the health status and outcomes for people of all ages with SB, such as electronic health records from clinics or other healthcare facilities, administrative data sources such as state Medicaid data, hospital discharge data, or other types of state registries

To be eligible for Component B (optional), you must demonstrate that you have applied for Component A by providing a copy of the front page from your Component A application.
