USAID/Jordan Water Innovations Technologies
Jordan is one of the most water scarce countries in the world and with an ever growing population it struggles to balance water supply and demand.1 Jordan has one of the best water treatment and delivery systems in the region; however, providing safe water to more than 98 percent of Jordanians while meeting the demands of a growing population, further compounded by the influx of refugees from surrounding conflict zones, is a challenge for the Government of Jordan (GOJ) institutions. Additional pressures on already limited water resources, combined with inefficient water use in the agriculture sector, stress the need for more sustainable water use and water conservation.
The objective of the Water Innovations Technologies (WIT) activity is to conserve water through the adoption of proven water-saving technologies and techniques. WIT targets water conservation at the end user level, promoting practices to preserve, protect, and utilize water resources better. Long term interventions will reduce unsustainable groundwater extraction that depletes aquifers, balancing the high demands on Jordan’s limited water resources. Simple interventions for safe water collection and storage will also benefit households and communities. WIT aims to leverage the use of technologies through improved public awareness, behavioral change, capacity-building and institutional strengthening measures, and incentives such as financing.
